What to Wear to a Fall Wedding

Dressing For an Autumn Wedding

Dress for the Time and Place

Aside from color, time and place are the two most important things to consider when attending a fall wedding. Is the wedding taking place in a garden? a ballroom? a vineyard?

If the wedding is taking place outdoors, bring a shawl or stylish overcoat to keep warm.

For an afternoon fall wedding, you can absolutely wear a dressy sundress. Evening weddings require more dressing up, so choose a tasteful cocktail dress or a suit. Another thing to consider is that the weather may get cooler as you move from the ceremony to the reception site, so plan accordingly. Ultimately, use the clues on the invitation to help you determine the time and place of the wedding which, in turn, will tell you how dressy your outfit should be.

Here are some samples of my favorites for Fall 2021!

  1. Tiffany One-Shoulder Midi Dress, $148-188.00

  2. Sweet Whispers Long Sleeve Dress, $128.00

  3. Shasha Floral Dress, $115.00

  4. Calvin Klein Off the Shoulder Sheath Dress, $149.00

  5. ASOS Ruffle Detail Maxi with Dip Hem, $71.00

  6. ASOS Textured Midi Scoop Neck Smock Dress, $46.00

Consider the Color

Probably the most important thing to consider is: color. Always stay away from whites of any shade. Avoid brown, it’s drab. I would also recommend that you avoid solid, bright colors like red, orange, hot pink or orange. It’s also a great idea to check with the bride to see what the wedding colors are. You don’t want to be mistaken for a member of the wedding party or blend in too much with the scenery. For indoor events, black is always a safe bet. Patterns are also a fail-proof plan for your wedding guest attire!

Accessorize

For a fall wedding, you can use darker lipsticks as well as a pop of eyeshadow. As a rule of thumb, you should accentuate either your eyes or your lips, not both. Think pretty and natural, rather than the heavy makeup you’d wear for a night out on the town.

Feel free to wear earrings and a necklace as well as a bracelet or bangles. Similar to our makeup philosophy for a fall wedding, jewelry should be modest but fun and fashionable. Statement necklaces are okay, just pair them with dainty earrings to avoid “too much”.

Also, don’t forget a small clutch that coordinates with your outfit. Pack necessities in it like your phone, a little bit of cash (to tip valet or bartenders, when appropriate), your lip stick, and a compact!

Lastly, have fun and do what you can to feel like yourself.
